Polperro Family History

The GEDYE family of Polperro

The Gedye family farmed at Trenewan, Lansallos, at the end of the late 18th century. William Gedye (1766-1819) married Jennifer Hicks in 1791 and the couple had 14 children: 11 sons and three daughters. William's grandson, Joseph William Gedye (1837-1907) was born in nearby Polkerris and married a Polperro girl, Rachel Batten, in 1866 and became landlord of the Three Pilchards Inn (right) by the harbour in Polperro around 1870.

Joseph William Gedye (pictured left) was among the 80 Polperro men whose portraits were captured by the Cornish photographer Lewis Harding in the 19th century. The collection, mostly of local fishermen, remains one of Harding's greatest achievements as a pioneer photographer.
