Polperro Family History

The GEACH family of Polperro

The Geach family of Polperro can be traced back to John Geach who was born in Boconnoc in 1850, the only son of James and Mary Ann Geach. John married a Polperro girl Agnes Ann Oliver in Plymouth in 1872, and the couple move to Polperro in the 1870s where John worked as a fishmonger and baker in Talland Street. John and Agnes had eight sons and two daughters, all of whom married and produced 39 grandchildren between them.

John Geach (pictured left) was among the 80 Polperro men whose portraits were captured by the Cornish photographer Lewis Harding in the 19th century. John, born in 1850, was in his thirties at the time. The collection, mostly of local fishermen, remains one of Harding's greatest achievements as a pioneer photographer.
